National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC)

The National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) is a non-profit professional membership and advocacy organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and families.

It was founded in 1977. Every year, millions of children are involved in the child welfare system, including those who have been separated from their parents or guardians, those who are at risk of separation, and those who are also involved in the juvenile and criminal justice systems.

Many children who are involved in these systems face legal obstacles and are negatively impacted by poor foster care outcomes.

Children involved in these proceedings require well-trained attorneys to ensure that their voices are heard, their rights are protected, and that outcomes are reached that keep them safe with their families and on a path to success.

When all parties in the child welfare system—children, parents, and social service agencies—are represented by high-quality, well-trained lawyers, the system works best. The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACC) assists lawyers in doing this important work.

NACC promotes children’s rights and opportunities in the child welfare system by ensuring that they have access to effective legal representation.

We support a community of hard-working and dedicated professionals and help attract and retain a diverse talent pool in the children’s legal advocacy profession, and we advocate for policies that advance children’s rights, including the right to counsel, by providing programs and resources that improve the quality of legal representation for children, parents, and agencies.

Through attorney training and certification, the NACC promotes excellence. The American Bar Association has accredited us as the only national organization that certifies attorneys as Child Welfare Law Specialists.

Through a national membership organization and an annual National Child Welfare Law Conference, NACC fosters community. NACC Advances Justice by advocating for improved child welfare policy and legislation through public policy and legislative advocacy.
