An emergency shutdown (ESD) valve and its related valve actuator are part of a process control system’s emergency shutdown system. In the case of a process control system failure, an emergency shutdown (ESD) controller sends output signals to the ESD valve.

The ESD controller activates a solenoid valve, which causes the actuator to fail. The ESD valve is tested using a digital valve controller (DVC). An impedance booster device allows the solenoid valve and DVC to be powered by dc over a two-wire line while still allowing digital communication over the same two-wire line.

Functionality

Risk evaluations have traditionally found that the Emergency Shutdown system requires a high Safety Integrity Level, usually SIL 2 or 3.

The system is made up of field-mounted sensors, valves, and trip relays, as well as system logic for signal processing, alarm, and HMI units.

The system may process input signals and activate outputs in line with the installation’s Cause and Effect charts.
